| Mike Genevay Inducted 2006 Michael Genevay received his Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans. He has also completed 30 hours of post-graduate work at the University of New Orleans in school administration. He has studied trombone with Richard Erb of the Louisiana Philharmonic as well as, on a limited basis, with Frank Crisafulli and Edward Kleinhammer of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Mr. Genevay is currently in his 32nd year as Director of Bands and 1st year as Principal at St.Clement of Rome School in Metairie, La. During this period of time his bands have consistently received superior ratings at local, state & regional festivals including 63 sweepstakes ratings at the District Large Ensemble Festival. The Symphonic Band was selected as 1st runner-up at the prestigious National Adjudicators’ Invitational Festival in Chattanooga, Tenn. in 2001. That achievement was noteworthy in that St.Clement was the only elementary-middle school band at that event and still placed 2nd in the overall standings! The jazz program has never received lower than a superior rating in its 22-year existence at festivals throughout the south and is regularly invited to perform at conventions and local fundraisers throughout the area. With nearly 300 children in the program, the number of students who are enrolled in band represent more than 92% of the total school population in grades 4 through 8. The band program at St. Clement has been recognized for excellence by numerous professional and educational institutions such as The International Association of Jazz Educators, The National Band Association, The Southern Association of Schools, The National Education Association, The Music Educators’ National Conference and The Louisiana Music Educators’ Association. In 2005 the Symphonic Band was presented the “Magna Cum Laude Award” from the Women Band Directors’ International. This award recognizes excellence in musicianship in middle school concert bands. Also in 2005, Mr. Genevay was selected to receive the “Legion of Honor Award” at the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. This award, which is sponsored jointly by the “John Philip Sousa Foundation” and “Band World Magazine”, is annually presented to eight band directors from across the nation in “appreciation for significant contributions and dedication to bands and band music.” In 2006, Mr. Genevay was one of 5 band directors in the nation whom received the “Mr. Holland’s Opus Award” at a ceremony in Carnegie Hall in New York. He was also presented a check for $10,000.00 dollars at that event which recognizes excellence in music education. Mr. Genevay has been a trombonist with the Pete Fountain Jazz Band for the last 28 years and has performed throughout the country with this group including one presidential inauguration (Reagan) and two state dinners in the White House (Reagan & Bush). He has performed on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson as well as the “Nashville Now” variety show and in numerous public television programs. The band has also been a featured group in concert with major symphony orchestras including The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Dallas Symphony, The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The Houston Symphony, The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra to name but a few. Before joining the Fountain Band, Mr. Genevay performed with a number of local musical groups including The New Orleans Symphony and Opera Orchestras and as a regular member of the Blue Room Orchestra under the direction of Dick Stabile. He is a member of the Louisiana Music Educators’ Hall of Fame (1999), Phi Beta Mu Fraternity, The Louisiana Music Educators’ Association, The National Band Association and was selected as “Band Director of the Year” for the 2000-2001 & 2005-2006 school years by the membership of the District VI Band Directors’ Association. |
