   JOHN MAHONEY is a Professor and Coordinator of Jazz Studies in the College of Music
and Fine Arts and directs the Loyola University Jazz Band, which won the Dr. M.E. “Gene” Hall
Award for the most outstanding collegiate big band at the 2007 North Texas Jazz Festival at
Addison.  He earned a BS in Music Education from the State University of New York at
Potsdam and a MM degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of
Music.  In addition to teaching, he remains an active performer on both trombone and piano. He
appears as pianist and arranger on a CD entitled Jazznocracy with the Al Belletto Big Jazz Band
and is the trombonist on Matt Lemmler’s Portrait of Wonder recording.  A CD of ten of
Mahoney’s big band compositions has been released entitled In From Somewhere.  This big band
continues to perform monthly in New Orleans.  Mr. Mahoney has eighteen compositions for jazz
ensemble published with Walrus Music Publishing, and is a member of MENC and IAJE. He also
directs the annual Loyola University Jazz Ensemble Festival and Loyola Summer Jazz Band Camp.
