Announcing the 42nd Annual Loyola University
Jazz Ensemble Festival
Friday and Saturday
March 18 & 19, 2011
Dear Band Director:
I am pleased to announce that Nicholas Payton will be the guest artist and
clinician for the 2011 Loyola University Jazz Ensemble Festival.
Born into a musical family and mentored by jazz masters Clyde Kerr and Ellis Marsalis at
the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Nicholas Payton was well-prepared to leap
into the jazz fray when he emerged in New York in the early 1990s. Since 1994 when he
made his recording debut as a leader with From This Moment, the trumpeter has been
lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. While his jazz journey has taken him down
many roads—from heritage artist to electric experimenter – the 34-year-old trumpeter
has arrived at a new plateau of jazz maturity with Into the Blue, his ninth album and his
first for Nonesuch.
The Loyola Festival will include on both Friday and Saturday FREE Master Classes at 12:
30 p.m. for all instruments taught by Nicholas Payton and the Loyola Jazz Faculty. In
addition, two concerts highlight the Festival, and participants will receive complimentary
tickets:
